Breaking News Broken News: Culture’s Fixation on Celebrityhood

Coursework Instructions:

Use Chapter Two (Breaking News, Broken News) to examine celebrityhood and how style is outstripping substance, as seen in our pervasive entertainment culture (p. 53). With our current fixation on celebrity culture, are we looking to a small minority of folks who distort the truth to make a buck or enhance their power (e.g., Alex Jones)?
Part I.
What are your thoughts about our culture’s fixation on celebrityhood? Does being a celebrity work well with politics? Please substantiate with in-text citations from the attached source labeled chapter 2 and another credible source. One page double-spaced. APA citations and references. Even though celebrities have freedom of speech, do they have a responsibility to the public to be conscious of the material when they promote their opinions? Use examples.
Part II.
Use one recent example from the news where feuds or infotainment are used to stimulate viewership, and eclipse substantive issues (e.g., DeSantis and Trump power struggle). Did these headlines or conflicts appear in the news, and from what source? Then go to another news source such as PBS, BBC or Guardian and see what was happening that day in the more important world and document. It is important to examine a story from multiple viewpoints and there is a free website called "Ground News" that looks at the same story from the left, center, and right. You can download the free app on your smartphone. One page with APA citations and references.

On the one hand, celebrities can leverage their fame and large followings to enter politics, effectively conveying their messages. They may bring fresh perspectives and new ideas. On the other hand, critics argue that celebrity status does not guarantee political competence. The focus on image and popularity can overshadow substantive discussions. In addition, the media's role in perpetuating celebrity culture can influence political outcomes. Balancing the advantages and concerns of celebrity involvement in politics remains a complex issue.
There is no doubt that celebrities are responsible to the public, considering their broad reach. They must find the delicate balance between freedom of speech and having this responsibility. Celebrities should be mindful of the material they endorse as this may considerably impact society (Majic et al., 2020). This a perfect example of underpinning the importance of responsibility to avoid the spread of misinformation. Misinformation is a critical concern, as celebrities endorsing unfounded claims can contribute to grave consequences such as vaccine hesitancy. Misinformation may also undermine other positive efforts. Responsible communication, fact-checking, and education are essential in preventing the spread of false information. When addressing social issues, celebrities should approach them with sensitivity and informed perspectives. Such an approach would help avoid perpetuating misunderstandings. In politics, celebrities must promote informed decision-making rather than relying on popularity, as superficial endorsements may undermine the democratic process. Another example of the implication of a celebrity's spe...
