Many artists have used painting as an artistic expression to express issues that affect societies or even matters that affect them. Edvard Munch is one of the artists who used his works of art to communicate with the audience on matters that affected him. Most of his paintings communicated about matters that affected people or even reflected humans and how they relate with others within the society. The Scream is one of the paintings that Munch painted to represent his soul and the troubled times he experienced in his childhood as he grew into adulthood. The painting was not just a product of anxiety or an unusual fright moment. Instead, the painting represents trauma and mental illnesses that the artist experienced, and his efforts of rationalizing and explaining these experiences are made through what he does best; painting.
As Munch was growing up, his mother died of tuberculosis when he was five years old, and then his sister died of the same disease when he was 14 years old. After these experiences, Munch captured the latter event, The Sick Child, which was his first masterpiece (Beams, 2019). Then again, the deaths of his brother and father happened when he was still young, and a few months later, his other sister was permanently hospitalized in a mental institution for suffering mental illness. The traumatic life that Munch experienced intensified by poverty that Munch's family faced, which happened despite his father being a physician. Munch's painting, The Scream, is iconic art, like Mona Lisa, because it evokes serenity and self-control.
