Gender equality in the United States has is becoming a reality. While there are still many disparities experienced between men and women, we can attest that there has been positive development of the past years. There are many changes in the social attitudes regarding the role of men and women. While the country ranks higher in the gender equality index, there are still cases of discrimination in both workplace and domestic settings. There are increased cases of discrimination against women with regard to employment in certain jobs. Moreover, most of the jobs with higher wages are reserved for men, which enlarges the gender gap. Cases of women being locked out of formal employment are also still happening. This means that there are still gender gaps existing within the country. In spite of the developments that have been experienced over they years, there are still many cases of discrimination and backward social attitudes against women. Women are reported to spend twice as much time doing housework compared to men, which is an indication of the prevalent gender gaps within the country. On the other side, it has also been reported that women are very reluctant to request men to assist with housework. They are the ones more concerned about domestic tasks that have never been handled compared to men. This means that gender equality is not yet a reality in the United States (England, Levine, & Mishel, 2020).

Food behaviors are complex traits of how humans interact with each other. There are several motives that determine where someone can select a certain meal or not. It is widely believed that culture plays a major role in the type of food that individual selects or purchase. Culture shapes people’s attitudes, habits, customs, and values. All these traits are usually learned and instilled in the child’s mind from childhood. When it comes to food selection, culture serves as an avenue of emotional connection on what the person will select. Through the cultural perception, they can either approve, disapprove, and select certain meals. There are certain foods that have important cultural meaning, and connect an individual with their family or community. Social factors that influence food selection include maternal or breastfeeding, which are types of foods selected only for nursing mothers. Another social aspect that determine food selection is gender. In certain cultures, there are foods that are cooked or prepared for men or women.
