Investigating Buddhism

  1. List and describe the four sights that the young Siddhartha Gautama experienced upon leaving the palace. (Approximately 10 words for each)40
  • Sight #1: A woman bent with old age – "It is only age which overtakes us all" (Buddharakkhita, 1985, p. 14). In this sight, the prince saw a bent, wrinkled woman faltering on her cane. He regarded her with compassion but did not understand what was wrong with her since he had never seen a sickly person.
  • Sight #2: A person afflicted with sickness – In this sight, the prince saw a man whose face was so low and drawn, and his legs were glazed with fever. Since the prince had never seen a person with a disease, he did not know what was wrong with him.
  • Sight #3: A corpse – "That was once a man, but death has come to claim him" (Buddharakkhita, 1985, p. 69). His sight was that of a corpse stretched out for cremation. It looked more like a log than a living person.
  • Sight #4: A wandering ascetic – This was the sight of a man seated by the edge of the road with closed eyes. His body was upright and still.

  • Significance of Sight #2: All people are subject to disease, regardless of socioeconomic status or standing in society. At some point, people will be infected with a disease that could quickly threaten life. The disease affects all people, regardless of religion or not, poor, rich, educated, illiterate, and young and old across genders, racial, and cultural differences.
  • Significance of Sight #3: Ultimately, no person is immortal, and they must face death. Like disease and old age, death is not discriminatory, and it is unpredictable. Ultimately, the idea of death is what makes life meaningful.
    • Significance of Sight #4: Channa explained that the man was a giant shoe, a person who has left worldly life to seek what lies beyond. This is when the body seems dead, but the spirit is awake. Today, it is called yoga.
