The Bible contains many stories that are similar in structure and the teachings they relay. The story of Tabitha is no different, and it is possible to relate it to several other stories. The outstanding feature of Tabitha’s story that catches everyone’s attention is her resurrection. The story relays how she died suddenly and how the disciples in Joppa sent two men to fetch Apostle Peter, who was in a nearby town. The Bible further tells how Peter prayed and brought Tabitha back to life. In the old testament, in the book of 1 Kings 17:17-24, the prophet Elijah prayed for the resurrection of a son of a widow in Zarephath. The Bible details how the prophet stretched himself on the boy before praying to the Lord. In the New Testament also, Jesus raised several people from the dead, including the daughter of Jairus.
The story of Tabitha falls in the category of redemption. This is because redemption involves regaining that which one had lost. In Tabitha’s scenario, she regained her life courtesy of the fervent prayers of Peter. The Bible tells how she succumbed to a sudden illness and was placed in an upper room, but Peter prayed for the redemption of her life. In addition, the church in Joppa had lost a valuable member. The Bible chronicles that Tabitha’s charitable works had endeared her to many, and the church perceived her demise as a huge loss. When she got her life back, the church, too, redeemed its prominent member.
