Basic History of The Event
This was the first overseas war between the Romans and Carthaginians. It happened on the coast of North Africa – also considered as the most significant and most successful part of the Phoenician cities. This fight was to gain influence and control of the island of Sicily. The power of the Sicilian island had forever been fought for by the Carthage and Greek colonies. All this while no country has definitively won the fight before and when Rome joined, the island’s control remained separated between the Carthage and the Greeks in the western and eastern sides of the Sicilian island respectively. The Romans and Carthaginians had friendly relations before 264 B. C. E. Both counties even had teamed up to fight against the Etruscans during the 500 B. C. E. This treaty enabled the friendly relationships between them since it noted that the Mediterranean was under the control of Carthage. Besides, it said that Rome had no rights to use the sea – “not even to wash their hands” without seeking consent from the Carthaginians. This kind of arrangement worked since for all that period the Romans was always involved with their fight against Italy. This changed when Italy won, and the Romans started to get their noses into Sicilian businesses (Lazenby, J., 2016).
How do the culture’s values relate to the conflict?
Culture’s values are implanted in all conflicts since conflicts happen in human relationships. These values influence several aspects of human relationships, including how they try to avoid and solve disputes. Before the battle, the two nations lived in a more collectivist setting. As such, they upheld values like cooperation, interdependence as well as involvement in shared progress. This can be noted by their merging to fight against the Etruscans. When Italy wins the war against the Romans, they tend to transform into an individualist setting – where values like competition, interdependence and self-reliance dominate.
