In the study on role conformance, Zimbardo’s team intended to develop an in-depth understanding of the basic psychological mechanisms that determine human aggression. As such, they intended to come up with guidelines for the isolation and identification of factors that influence aggressive or submissive behavior in such institutions as a prison (Haney et al., 1973). Similarly, the study sought to identify the conditions that would trigger unrest in men placed in situations that constrain them to have contact for a considerable period.
The study indicated that the environment of arbitrary confinement significantly impacts the emotional states of guards and prisoners. It also affects interpersonal relationships between the individuals involved. Overall, guards and prisoners exhibit negativity that rose markedly, which included their outlook.
