Interacting with Jerome Kegan’s work in this week’s chapter was a discovering journey that has enabled me to reflect on the concepts of genetic behavior and the nature of temperament. Kegan brings eye-opening discussions about one’s life and how their behavior remains a representation of their genetic predisposition in diverse ways. Although I was not conceptually aware of the intricate relationship between one’s genetic composition and the accomplishment of fundamental milestones or display of personality in later stages of life, I understood that people remain unique. However, Kegan’s materials’ learning enabled me to reflect on the people I know and my life to further understand the concept of temperament.
One of the cases where Kegan’s arguments about temperaments and how they can continue in a person’s adulthood emerge through the behavioral development of one of my young nieces. Although I was unaware of how her never-ending curiosity about toys fitted into the temperament discourse during her young days, Kegan’s argument confirms her reactions to new environments were due to the inactivated behavioral inhibition system and the amygdala. As a result, she tended to maintain interest in almost all circumstances. Everyone argued that she would become as adventurous as her father, always looking out for mountain climbing and other nature trail events.
