Sensation and Perception
My greatest fear would be the loss of sight. Reason being, a loss of vision would make me more dependable on other people compared to a loss of hearing since I would not be able to walk around or perform various tasks that require eyesight easily. Personally, I have witnessed how blind people find it difficult to walk around, especially in places that they are unfamiliar with. Also, losing my eyesight would greatly interfere with my hobbies. The loss would mean having to adopt other hobbies and change my lifestyle to one that will be accommodated by my lack of vision. However, a loss of hearing only deprives me the ability to participate in oral conversations, but I can communicate using other means such as texting, or using sign language. For that reason, losing my sight would be most difficult.
After reading Chapter six of the book, my thoughts and beliefs remain unchanged. Notably, the chapter has enlightened me on the issue of loss of sight, specifically on perception. Our brains register not only information but also filters information received from our senses to infer perceptions that make sense to us (Myers, 2010). The inferences mean that our perception of the world and our environment is dependent on our vision and our brain’s ability to pay visual attention and integrate elementary features. However, when we lose our eyesight, our brain is dependent on other senses to construct a similar picture of our environment. Nonetheless, our other senses cannot be able to identify as many of the items in our surroundings to enable our brains to construct a similar picture compared to our eyes.
