Career Development Theory
Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) was coined by Albert Bandura in 1986. SCCT suggested a model with three sections of career development, including career choices, vocational interests, as well as career performance and stability. The three segments focused on self-efficacy, personal goals, and outcome expectations among individuals during the career development process. According to SCCT, personal goals can be conceptualized as intentional participation in certain activities to achieve particular outcomes. Self-efficacy refers to a dynamic set of beliefs associated with a specific performance domain. Outcome expectations entail an individual’s beliefs about the consequences of a particular behavior. According to this school of thought, career development goals and choices are roles played by the connection amongst self-efficacy, interests, as well as outcome expectations over specified timeframes (Jena & Nayak, 2020). SCCT also argues that compromise in individual interests is required when making career choices due to forces that hinder choice-making, such as cultural beliefs and social barriers.
How SCCT Can be expanded to Provide Inclusive Descriptions of Career Development Experience for a Diverse Spectrum of People.
Individuals struggling with autism spectrum disorder are characterized by the inability to communicate effectively and have healthy interpersonal relationships. These individuals are disadvantaged in career development due to difficulties in communications and interpersonal social competencies, which are critical determinants of employee success at the workplace. SCCT can be revised to provide inclusive descriptions of career development experience for individuals with spectrum infections in various ways. SCCT can be expanded to foster motivation levels among spectrum people. Since spectrum people tend to display low self-efficacy in the career development process, SCCT can be used to enhance high self-efficacy through providing incentives such as continued task exposure, practice, and giving feedback to instill a sense of efficacy in a particular activity, as well as gaining certain expectations pertaining outcomes of activity participation among individuals with spectrum condition.
