Please construct a response to each of the following questions. (Provide supportive information, this might be explaining a theory and/or specific details from the book.)
1 On pages 29 and 31 of the 2011 edition of Critical Care (Chapter 3), Theresa Brown shares some of her thoughts and feelings concerning a patient’s, Mary’s, treatment.
1 What physical challenge (of the patient) did the medical team prioritize?
1 The physical challenge that the medical team prioritized was the patient’s difficulty in breathing. It was a code situation, which necessitated prompt action from the medical team.
2 Using one of the five theories we are highlighting in the course, please explain the need to prioritize this challenge.
2 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can explain the need to prioritize this challenge on Mary’s health. It could be seen that many stakeholders, in this case, have various needs, like Mary, her husband, and even the health professionals who are providing care. However, Mary is the one with the most basic need, which is physiological needs. This is the reason why despite the fear and misery that her husband feels with what is happening (security needs) and the health professional’s fear that they would not be able to save their patient (security needs and self-esteem), Mary’s respiration should be the highest priority for all of them.
3 While she is an active participant in Mary’s care, Theresa is also learning. On page 30 (2011) and using one of the five theories we are highlighting in the course, please explain how she is learning.
3 Mary is learning because of her interaction with her immediate environment. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory provides that an individual’s development and learning are based on his interaction with the immediate spheres where he belongs to. In this case, it could be seen that Mary is learning by doing what others are also doing. Although she is afraid to do things that are new to her, this serves as a part of her development.
2 On pages 17 through 19 (2011) of Critical Care, Theresa Brown shares some of her thoughts / feelings about a patient’s, Jim’s, needs and about her learning process.
1 Please identify a passage (or passages) on page 19 that can be explained using Bandura’s Social Cognitive Learning Theory. Explain how Bandura’s Theory applies.
1 “At my hospital on my floor, medical oncology, orientation lasts eight weeks for nurses. A nurse on orientation works closely with another nurse….”
1 This passage reflects Bandura’s theory which posits that learning happens when an individual watches, observes, and assimilates, among others, their learnings from others. In this case, this technique was clearly used to orient and teach new nurses about the protocols. By having them watch, they can understand, comprehend, and assimilate their learning in their practice as a nurse.
3 In the first three pages of chapter two in Critical Care (pages 13-15 of the 2011 edition), Theresa ...
