Steps to Complete Week 5 Lab

Use the Weeks 3 and 5 spreadsheets to help you answer the questions below.

Step 1: Survey or measure 10 people to find their heights. Determine the mean and standard deviation for this group by using the Week 3 Excel spreadsheet. Post a screen shot of the portion of the spreadsheet that helped you determine these values. How does your height compare to the mean (average) height of the group that you surveyed? Is your height taller, shorter, or the same as the mean of your group?

Step 3: Use the Week 5 Excel spreadsheet for the following.

  1. (Use the Empirical Rule tab from the spreadsheet). Determine the 68%, 95%, and 99.7% values of the Empirical Rule in terms of the ten heights in your height study.
  2. What do these values tell you?

Statistical measures remain indispensable in all types of research regardless of the sample sizes. Making predictions significantly on how well statistical data has been analyzed. For instance, measures of central tendency such as mean, mode and median are vital in the making of predictions as well as the group performance descriptions. In combination with measures of dispersion like standard variation, the parameters are popularly applied to make conclusions in lab reports. For example, in surveys, they are essential in drawing relevant conclusions about the larger population using the sample statistics collected on height. Therefore, this study explores the heights of selected individuals and uses the collected data to provide insight using a statistical approach.
Step 1: Survey
The following is the data collected on the heights (in centimeters) of ten people;
177, 156, 157, 163, 167, 165, 178, 166, 183, and 167
The standard deviation and mean are 8.8876 cm and 167.9 cm, respectively. These measures imply that the height of a randomly selected individual will lie within a range of approximately 8.9 cm from the mean. Below is a portion of the spreadsheet screenshot that helped in the determination of the mean height and the standard deviation of the collected data.

Comparatively, my height is 0.9 cm less than the mean height. That is, my height is 167 cm.
Step 2: Background Information on People Used for Study
The random sampling method was used to measure the heights of ten respondents during a visit to Cambridge’s Harvard University in Massachusetts. In the maiden trip that mainly aimed at collecting this data, the focus was on an equal number of males as females. According to Cekim and Kadilar (2018), it is highly recommended to collect data from both genders when dealing with human’s physical is because the approach helps in getting more reliable data.
