Walmart Boot Camp
1 The pros and cons of rotating participants from in-class back to the worksite
Pros
* The employees can quickly implement skills learned at the boot camp, and rotation gives them time to practice the skills in a natural environment.
* Participants learn to be versatile as the alternate between the boot camp and familiarize themselves with the new skills at the worksite.
* Due to the long duration of the boot camp, rotation ensures trainees are motivated, which avoids stress and burn-out.
* It allows for a more creative thought process as trainees use the acquired skills in new posts and departments.
* Rotation of trainees ensures that a large number of participants can receive the necessary skills in the shortest time possible.
* The cycle provides continuous acquiring of skills, and any situations encountered in the worksite can be revisited for clarity.
Cons
* The disadvantage of rotating trainees is that it takes longer for trainees to complete the boot camp course, leading to delayed results and company objectives.
* The cost of training is costly to the company due to the alternation and long duration it takes to complete the boot camp.
* Trainees may be demotivated and irritated due to the back and forth.
The top management of Walmart should offer support to the trainers to ensure trainees get more out of the boot camp by providing the necessary resources, including training materials, and ensuring the curriculum being taught is reflective of the training objectives (Mathis et al., 2016).
2 Effectiveness of the Leadership Academy
I would evaluate the effectiveness of the Leadership Academy by determining the tangible outcomes from the program, such as the level of customer and employee satisfaction, the rate of employee turnover in a company, the level of communication and interpersonal skills acquired by the participants, and the overall productivity and sustainability of the company.
3 The impact of military-style training on Walmart's employment brand. Would it appeal to certain segments of the labor force?
With the training, employees are better equipped to deal with day-to-day challenges in the workplace as they are trained to be alert and think critically as they go about their duties. Employees are also able to manage work-related stress and increase their productivity. The overall impact on Walmart’s employment brand is positive as they have a robust organizational structure and a transparent chain of command due to the adoption of the military model.
The military-like training will appeal to specific segments of the labor force, such as the young and strong, ex-military people, among others, and this will put Walmart and labor unions at loggerheads. This will decrease the ability of Walmart to recruit diverse employees as potential employees may shy away from the rigorous military-like training (Mathis et al., 2016).
