1 Writing for School versus Social Media Updates
The growth of social media has seen an increase in the time people spend posting updates. For some people, social media accounts for the majority of their daily writing. For students, writing for school differs with social media updates in several ways. School writing requires strict adherence to the rules of grammar, but social media updates often disregard these rules. For example, the full stop is consistently omitted, words abbreviated and sentences are short. When posting social media updates, people tend to write and spell words how we speak them; words are shortened and contracted in a way that reflects their speech. For example, dropping the ‘t’ in ‘left.’ The need for abbreviation is associated with the limitation of characters that existed in text messages and still exists in apps such as Twitter. School writing is often lengthy and argumentative. Like most of my friends I tend to do my homework in a hurry and sometimes forget to proofread, and when I do so, I don’t pay so much attention. But it is not the case with social media updates, which I correct severally before posting. Editing and proofreading are crucial as they will not only make a good first impression on my new viewers but will also make a lasting impression on my current followers. One little typo in my Tweet can convey carelessness to my followers which would affect my credibility.
