Because its central figure is a female professor, Wit highlights the role of women in education as well as the nature of female intellectualism. But this representation does not unproblematically celebrate women’s achievements: Vivian Bearing’s professional success appears to have come at the cost of personal relationships, be they familial, friendly, collegial, or sexual. Still, the character is an uncompromising intel­lect who takes great pleasure in her mind and the challenges presented by difficult mental work of all kinds—literary, linguistic, or scientific. In your initial post, answer the following questions: How does the play portray female intellect? (Consider, as well, the other female characters in the play as you form your response.) Is Vivian’s intellectualism conveyed as empowering or destabilizing her character? What role does her cancer play in this portrayal?

I agree with Tina Holocomb that the film portrays female intellect as cold and unrelenting in its pursuit of knowledge although I do not think that kindness is portrayed as unintelligent. If Dr. Vivian Bering is portrayed as humorless, self-sufficient, distant, and incapable of making meaningful connections with others, Susan Monahan, although not as academically minded but intelligent nonetheless, is shown to be kind, thoughtful, considerate, and approachable. Although Susan may not be as gifted as the other clinicians in Dr. Kelekian’s oncology unit, she does not share in their callousness and vain intellectual adequacy. I also agree that although Vivian’s intelligence, conscientiousness, and formality may have served her well in her scholarly life and even empowered her, the academic rigor and emotional unavailability come to haunt her when she was most vulnerable. Because she is incapable of understanding or developing personal connections, she begins to suffer tremendously from her loneliness in the sick ward.
