PICOT-Based Sampling Strategy

Coursework Instructions:

Understanding the sampling process will contribute to your ability to critique research from a consumer's point of view. This week's Forum Discussion will help you with developing your sampling strategy for the Practice Proposal Assignment. You will develop your sampling strategy based upon your PICOT. It should be approached in relation to the parameters or attributes of the study population, representative of the defined population, appropriateness of the sampling plan to the research design, appropriateness and justification of the sample size, and evidence that the rights of human participants (subjects) have been protected.
Here are some guidelines to help you:
A, Define your target population and sample.
B, discuss your sampling approach in terms of their nature, use, advantages, and disadvantages: convenience, quota, and purposive.
C, Indicate the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
D, Discuss the factors that influenced determination of sample size.
E, Discuss potential threats to internal and external validity as sources of sampling bias.
PICOT Question:
“For geriatric patients of 55 years and beyond admitted with osteoarthritis [OA], does the use of hip and leg strengthening exercises programs together with pharmacotherapy, compared to the use of pharmacotherapy alone, improve in the management of OA by relieving pain, contraction and stiffness, during three months of rehabilitation?”
Articles used on the PICOT question.

This is part of the instructions "The aim of the cosmic question you propose should provide critique for your sampling strategy". 1 simple question needed to critique with class members based on the sampling strategy. Thanks.

The target population of my study would be geriatric patients of 55 years and beyond admitted with osteoarthritis [OA], who utilizes hip and leg strengthening exercises programs together with pharmacotherapy, in order to help manage the pain, contraction, and stiffness, and also patients who use pharmacotherapy alone. In looking for the sample population, a probabilistic sampling would be employed in order to reduce bias in terms of picking the respondents. More specifically, stratified sampling method would be used since this sampling method is best used, when a “heterogeneous population is split into fairly homogeneous groups” (PennState - Eberly College of Science, 2017), which is the case for dividing the heterogeneous groups into those which (1) uses pharmacotherapy and hip and leg strengthening exercises programs, and patients who (2) uses pharmacotherapy alone. In the study, the heterogeneous population of patients who all uses pharmacotherapy would then be divided into the subgroups/strata as mentioned above. After the strata were established random sampling would then occur. As for the main advantage of this method, I believe that it would be the reduction of the selection bias and ensure that both overrepresentation and underrepresentation are kept in check (Investopedia, 2015). Also, the selected sampling method would provide convenience because this coul...
