An obstacle is anything that impedes progress. It can be a physical, psychological, or task-related problem, such as the task's complexity. An individual should be focused and unruffled to realize their goals (Melloy, 2018). Low motivation is one of the factors which hinder goal achievement. Bill Courtney faced a significant obstacle as a coach when he volunteered to assist Manassas High School's football team. Despite the challenges he faced, Courtney achieved his goal: improve the team's performance.
What approach was used to overcome the obstacle?
The major obstacle Courtney faced was how to motivate his team. Leaders need to make their teams feel competent, value what they do and get what they desire. The expectancy theory suggests that anticipated results motivate human behavior (Baumann, 2016). Courtney became a father figure for his players and helped shape their resolve, integrity, and character. Despite their indiscipline issues, he maintained his squad, advised injured students to continue attending therapy, and arranged for tutors to attend to prospective college football players in his team. The results Courtney desired drove him to be a father figure to guide his players.
