Understatement - Comedic Device (Coursework Sample)
I don't know the number of words. If I need more than one page to write, I will pay for it when I get it.
For this unit, there are two options for your work. You can either:
Find three additional examples of one of the listed comedic devices. For each example, explain how the technique works.
Choose a comedic device that is not listed on the handout and write an entry for it, including an example (it should look like the entries for the other devices).
Understatement is a comedic device that is used to share partial information. According to Glen Cavaliero, if a writer presents a specific thing or situation in a lesser strength than it requires, then the condition is known as an understatement (Cavaliero, 2000). It is the opposite of overstatement or hyperbole.
Understatement is used in everyday conversation, as well as in pop culture and literature. Though there are a large number of examples, understatement can best be described using examples from daily life.
There is some water in the Pacific Ocean.
It is an understatement as the word “some” fails to describe whether the water is in gallons, square feet or cubic feet.
