Mitochondria
The mitochondria are a cellular structure that is membrane bound and is found in most of the cells that are eukaryotic. They range between 0.5 and 1.0 micrometers in their diameter. They are considered to be the power houses in a cell as they are involved in energy molecules synthesis, referred to as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) (Kühlbrandt, 2015).
The mitochondria are rod shaped and common in both animals and plants. It has an inner and out membrane and thus referred to as double membrane organelle. One of the main structures of the mitochondria is the outer membrane (Panse, 2009). This is a smooth and contains phospholipids and proteins in equal amounts (Kühlbrandt, 2015). The membrane is made up in large parts by a protein called porins which makes it permeable to particle less than 5000 Daltons. The inner membrane is a feature that contains many folds called cristae (Panse, 2009). It is the proteins on the inner membrane and the cristae that help in the synthesis of the ATP molecules. This membrane is only permeable to oxygen. The other feature is the inter membrane space which is between the inner and outer membrane.
The mitochondria have a number of functions which include the generation of energy in the form of mitochondria. By combining charged molecules with oxygen, ATP molecules are produced through oxidative Phosphorylation. It is also the function of the mitochondria to assist the cell in maintaining the correct concentration of calcium ions (Kühlbrandt, 2015).
