Alfred Wegener’s Continental Drift Theory
In 1912, Wegener was intrigued by the presence of identical fossils in the opposite sides of continent. This made him try to prove that these continents must have at one time of their history been close to each other. He explained this through his continental drift theory. However, he faced a lot of opposition from scientists due to his lack of clarification as to how the continents could have moved. In his view, Wegener asserted that the continents drifted as a result of tidal and centrifugal forces which were acting on them (Anderson, 1999). The society did not at first view his theory as valid. First, there were a lot of flaws in the data he collected from matching parts of the different continents. These flaws resulted to him making wrong predictions in terms of the drift rates some of which were beyond the actual and measurable drift rates.
