The state punishes offenders for crimes on behalf of the victim. Usually, this achieves justice and revenge but does not provide healing to the victim. Incarceration of offenders separates predatory and violent offenders from the general public (Alarid, 2017). However, incarceration does not always work for most offenders, and prolonged imprisonment of more people is not always the solution. Some other ways of punishment for crimes include restitution, community service, fines, and forfeitures.
