Under the clergy-penitent privilege, communication between a person and a priest for the purpose of spiritual guidance is kept secret. The priest cannot disclose conversations he had with a penitent with the police. In other words, if the penitent confesses to raping someone and is seeking forgiveness, the priest cannot report this to the police.
