While a network is ideally meant to enhance communication between the constituent stations, several factors may hinder this purpose. A network storm is one form of the possible disturbances encountered. A network storm is more technically referred to as a broadcast storm or a network meltdown.
A network storm is an event of increased activity caused by a malfunction that generates an unnecessary huge amount of responses. An incorrect packet broadcast that lacks an accurately defined path and location within the network may attract many hosts to respond simultaneously, thus causing the network to malfunction. The malfunction can be attributed to three factors: hardware failure, configuration errors, and the overloading of the network (Karris, 2009).
