Module 3 - Case
The case presented in Module 3 is another real-world situation using advancements in technology to improve health care and IT governance. The Veterans Health Administration case study highlights critical factors to the VHA's success by discussing technology infrastructure, organizational culture, and managerial leadership. The student will analyze the case in six sections in the order followed. Also, these sections must be used to format level 1 heading titles in the case report.
Give the case background and organizational environment.
Describe the case situation and structure of the organization.
Identify the key problems and issues in the case.
Describe how the organization responded to those issues with technology and leadership in terms of successes, failures, or unforeseen results.
Provide an assessment and reasons for supporting those solutions.
Review the case finding and conclude how the solution could be improved or propose something different.
This case was available free to read and download from the Palgrave McMillan Journal of Information Technology site. Case Background and Organizational Environment
The veteran health administration is known as an effective health care facility that renders cost efficient and quality health care results. Even though VHA is faced with similar problems as other health care organizations, it differs from these organizations because of its uniqueness regarding the health care needs it meets in the population of veterans. It is one of the biggest integrated health care organizations in the US (Broderick, 2013). Consequently, its key and specialty care services serve approximately 6 million veterans with an annual budget of over $50 billion. VHA successful transformation has been attributed to some elements such as a strategic vision, leadership support, highly trained personnel and IT infrastructure (Kehle et al., 2011). Examples of significant improvement goals at VHA include a reduction of hospital admissions, advanced patients satisfaction and fewer bed days of care.
Case Situation and Structure of the Organization
VHA has been able to respond to the serious needs of its veterans patients and also managed to diminish their utilization of institutional care through the care coordination/health telepath (CCTH) program (Lindeman, 2010). The program employs remote monitoring devices in the home of the veterans to communicate the status of health and convey biometric information that is tracked remotely by the individuals coordinating health care. The program has shown positive effects and resulted in greater levels of patients' satisfaction. For instance, at the end of the fiscal year 2010, it was depicted that the levels of patient satisfaction improved to 85% due to the CCTH program. Also, the program led to the lessening of care bed days by more than 40% (Broderick, 2013). Apart from the telepath technology, the organization also uses health informatics and ailment management technologies to enhance the provision of services remotely and increase accessibility to well-timed care for clients (Darkins et al., 2008). Consequently, the quality of health care the patients receive has been enhanced
Main problems and Issues in the Case
VHA is widely known for its concentration on IT, quality care services, and the provision of services remotely. Despite its achievements, the organization is also facing goal- driven challenges.
