A directory is a hierarchical structure that accumulates information about particulars on the network. A directory, in the most generic sense, is a broad listing of objects. A phone book is a type of directory that stores information about people, businesses, and government organizations. Phone books typically file names, addresses, and phone numbers. A directory resembles a database but figuratively contains more descriptive attribute-based data. Also, a directory embodies data that is concise and strictly relevant to an entry. By contrast, a database contains broad amounts of data for each entry that may, or may not be directly relevant to the entry. For this reason, a directory does not usually implement the transaction or roll-back schemes that normal databases demand. If they are permitted at all, directory updates are typically naive all-or-nothing changes. Directories are ordered to respond rapidly to high-volume lookup or search operations.
