The primary initiatives implemented due to the PATRIOT Act
The law, passed after the 9/11 attack, saw the following initiatives’ implementation. One was the expansion of section 215 of the constitution on record searches. It made it easy for authorities to access individuals’ activities and information held by third parties such as medical professionals, bookstores, internet providers, universities, and libraries. The second initiative was Section 213 on secret searches. The law allowed the government to conduct searches on one’s property without informing them or a search warrant, search through the property, take pictures and collect materials without the owner’s knowledge (American Civil Liberties Union, 2022).
Section 218 of the constitution on intelligence searches was expanded. Under the Act, the FBI could secretly carry out a physical search in a citizen’s home or place wiretaps without providing probable cause. Also, trap and trace initiatives were implemented based on Section 214 of the constitution.
