When using qualitative research techniques, we must put ourselves in the patients’ shoes and develop relationships with your participants. According to Lobiondo-Wood, G. & Haber, J. (2022), “Research-participant interaction may show an ethical concern by relationships developed between the researcher and participant may blur the focus of the interaction and may become unethical” (para.1). As nurses we must always protect the patients in all scientific investigation.
Auditability means the ability of the auditor to achieve accurate results of a study. One study explains how auditability can be achieved. According to VOUROS, G. A. (2023). “Interpretability, explainability, and transparency are key issues to introducing artificial intelligence methods in many critical domains. This is important due to ethical concerns and trust issues strongly connected to reliability, robustness, auditability, and fairness, and has important consequences toward keeping the human in the loop in high levels of automation, especially in critical cases for decision making, where both (human and the machine) play important roles(para.1).”
According to Spangler, C. R. (2023)., a qualitative research study was completes using schoolteachers, “High rates of special-education-teacher attrition negatively impact teachers and students. To address attrition and support new special education teachers, many school districts pair mentor teachers with novice teachers (mentees). This qualitative case study identified factors that special education mentors and mentees perceived as leading to a positive pairing in an induction program and considered how candidate-mentor pairing impacts perceived job satisfaction (para,1)”.
I will apply the concept of audibility by using a qualitative case study to research women who have been faced with the issue of having an abortion in another state and a mother who wanted to complete an abortion but is faced with restrictions placed by the new law. I will research current state guidelines first and make sure my findings are accurate by using auditability and qualitative study by placing myself in the shoes of the women who face the struggle of an unplanned pregnancy. I will also explore options for family planning and contraceptive methods which Is key for nurses to teach patients.
My PICO question will be “In the population of women of childbearing age, when should family planning and contraceptive methods be introduced to avoid unwanted pregnancies and how can nurses educate patients on safe sex practices?
P- Women of childbearing age
I- teaching family planning and contraceptive methods
C- Face to face counseling
O- improve safe sex practices
The BSN essential related to my topic of women’s health is essential seven, it discusses clinical prevention and population health, as baccalaureate level nurses, we can teach family planning and contraceptive methods to help reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies and abortions. According to the American Association Colleges of Nursing [AACN]. “Clinical prevention refers to individually focused interventions such as immunizations, screenings, and counseling aimed at preventing escalation of diseases and conditions” (AACN,2008).
The QSEN competency that correlates with women’s health and family planning is patient centered care. According to the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN),(2020), “Describe how diverse cultural, ethnic and social backgrounds function as sources of patient, family, and community values”. Three ways nurses can do this is by; “Value seeing health care situations “through patients’ eyes”, Seek learning opportunities with patients who represent all aspects of human diversity, and recognize personally held attitudes about working with patients from different ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds” (page 1).

Some of the ethical concerns related to research are maintaining personal information confidential and protecting human rights. This also requires obtaining information consent from participants. Tatano Beck (1993) states, “Credibility is qualitative research measures how vivid and faithful the description of the phenomenon is”; the article explains part of determining the integrity of a research are whether the findings, data collected, actions taken, interactions and results were notated and/or taken into consideration during the study. Also did the researcher(s) allow or not allow self-transcendence to be an influence of the study.
According to Charmaz (2021), “Theoretical sampling and theoretical saturation contribute to the quality of the study by strengthening researchers’ analysis and giving them material for making explicit claims about it”. In developing qualitative research, researchers generate studies, theory methods, newly evidence-based practices, with the intent of introducing new concepts that will contribute to nursing.
QSEN: Quality Improvement (QI) best supports credibility of qualitative research. The use of data to monitor the outcomes of care processes and use improvement methods to design and test changes to continuously improve the quality and safety of healthcare systems (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2012).
The BSN Essential: Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety best supports the importance of qualitative research. Baccalaureate graduates will understand and use quality improvement concepts, processes, and outcome measures. Use improvement methods, based on data from the outcomes of care processes, to design and test changes to continuously improve the quality and safety of health care (The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education, 2008).

The pose makes three important connections concerning qualitative research. The connections are the nature of the relationship between the researcher and the participant, the auditability of research outcomes, and the BSN essentials related to a study that incorporate the first two. What stands out for me is that study outcomes, particularly from an ethical point of view, depend on how keenly the researcher regards their relationship with participants. This relationship underpins an ethical study and guarantees accurate data, especially when the topic involves emotive issues like family planning, contraceptives, and abortion in a society seeking to control women’s bodily choices (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2022). For participants to give accurate responses and not be biased by stigma or fear of speaking, they must trust the researcher, who is not judgmental and intends to use the information or data responsibly and for a greater cause. By focusing on developing a relationship that is acceptable within ethical boundaries, I think it strengthens the possibility that you will have accurate results that paint the true picture of what this population (women of childbearing age) is going through. Such a relationship prioritizes the participant’s safety and privacy.
But of course, as you have stated, ethical relationships between researcher and participant go hand in hand with the auditability of a study; the ability to achieve accurate results. Ethical relationships guarantee accurate and truthful responses from participants. This, in turn, allows the auditor to achieve accurate results untainted by the said biases (Carcary, 2021). By taking this approach, I think you are strengthening your possibilities of obtaining reliable results. You establish positive and ethical relationships so they can trust you with their stories that they would...
