Taiwan’s Single-Payer System Discussion Post
According to Petrou et al. (2018), single-payer systems constitute one of the approaches to reducing health care costs and enhancing efficient utilization of the resources. Taiwan provides compulsory, universal health care coverage to its citizens through the single-payer approach. The country’s health insurance is predominantly financed through premiums based on an individual’s earnings (Cheng, 2020). However, the national government offers low-income households, civil servants, and other specified groups significant premium subsidies (Cheng, 2020). Taiwan’s single-payer system caters to the comprehensive care package, which includes outpatient, inpatient, and dental care; renal dialysis; traditional Chinese drugs; prescription medicines; physical rehabilitation; chronic psychological illness care; prenatal care; home nursing care; as well as preventive services, including adult and pediatric medical examinations and cancer screening (Cheng, 2015). Accordingly, the benefits and drawbacks of Taiwan’s single-payer system need to be evaluated to offer lessons to other countries aspiring for equitable universal healthcare.
