The chosen factor is gender and it affects the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes. Hypertension is one of the risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases and there are differences in the patterns of hypertension (Kalibala, Pechère-Bertschi & Desmeules, 2020). Sex-specific differences in the effects of atenolol (12.5 mg daily) and doxazosin (8 mg daily) and there are different pathways in the way the medications act to treat hypertension. Both medications are well-tolerated treatment for hypertension. Considering sex-specific differences is helpful to evaluate sensitivity to the medication in men and women.
Gender, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes
Atenolol is a type of beta-blocker drug for treating high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats and preventing chest pain. Such beta-blockers relaxing blood vessels and slow the heart rate, which improves the blood flow and decreases blood pressure. In women with slower clearance, enhanced absorption, and lower volume of distribution, when using atenolol which in turn cause the serum concentration-time curve (AUC) to be higher in men than women. Atenolol causes lower sex drive in men and even increases the risk of erection problems as the drug affects the nervous system and penile blood vessels.
Doxazosin is an alpha-blocker that treats high blood pressure and benign prostatic enlargement. Doxazosin decreases blood pressure in standing (upright) and supine (lying down) positions. Like atenolol, there are differences in the metabolism rate of doxazosin between men and women, which affect the drugs’ effectiveness (Johnson et al., 2019). Gender differences affect the way the medications affect the treatment of high blood pressure as the severity of hypertension changes with age and gender. Gender differences may influence the choice of antihypertensive treatment.
