Gastritis
A 50-year old man has been suffering from substernal pain for the last five months, particularly on waking up in the morning. He lost his job a year ago and was suffering from depression. He consumes about 12-16 cans of beer every day. He has lost his appetite too and says that eating aggravates the pain.
1 Is this Acute or Chronic Gastritis?
The patient is suffering from acute gastritis. Acute gastritis is a disease whereby the stomach lining becomes inflamed or swells and may cause acute and continuous pain (Mayo Clinic, 2020). The symptoms displayed by the patient indicate signs and symptoms of acute gastritis. The patient has been experiencing substernal pain the past several months, especially after waking up in the morning, which may result from acute gastritis. Decreased appetite and aggravated pain after eating are also indicators of acute gastritis.
2 What Factors may lead to the Development of Gastritis?
Several elements can damage the stomach lining, making it weak, which causes stomach irritation from digestive acids. Excessive consumption of alcohol may lead to acute gastritis. The patient uses about 12-16 beer cans daily. Continuous and severe stress that affects an individual's immune system may also lead to acute gastritis. The 50-year old man has been depressed since he stopped working almost one year ago, hence developing acute gastritis. Medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids are prevalent roots of acute gastritis (Kivi, 2019). Bacteria infecting the stomach, such as H. pylori, increases a patient's risk of suffering acute gastritis. Intake of corrosive chemicals such as poison may also cause acute gastritis. Other factors that may increase a patient's risk of suffering acute gastritis include kidney failure, cocaine abuse, respiratory malfunction, liver failure, undergoing major surgery, and complications arising from being on breathing machines or a respirator (Mayo Clinic, 2020).
