The Opioid risk tool assesses the risk for opioid abuse in a brief and self-reporting mechanism. It is used on individuals who use prescribed opioids for treating chronic pain. Patients identified as high-risk are more likely to get involved in drug abuse. Once the tool is administered, the score can be obtained in less than one minute. Both male and female patients who experience chronic pain can use the test. The tool is used during the patient's first visit before the patient is placed on opioids to manage pain. It is in a questionnaire format, assessing aspects such as family and personal substance abuse history, history of sexual abuse during the pre-adolescent stage, the patient’s age, and the presence of psychological ailment (Naimer et al., 2019).
