Nurse Practitioner Practice Agreements
In the state of North Carolina, Nursing Practitioners (NPs) are recognized as primary care providers by the policies set by the state. As NPs, nurses provide primary care, including diagnostic, preventive, treatment, referral, and consultative services or any other services that can be executed by nurse practitioners, physician assistants, , and physicians (Scope of Practice Policy, 2018). The NPs are also authorized to offer medical and psychiatric services as provided in the collaborative practice agreement (CPA) within all locations of outpatient offices as well as contracting agencies. Every NP who is certified by the board to provide services as a mental health or family psychiatric practitioner is allowed to offer limited medical care and psychiatric services as provided by the ANA scope of practice to populations including aged, pediatric, and adult patients.
One of the issues that arises from the “collaborative agreement” is that NPs are allowed to offer services in basic primary care under the approval of a physician.
