Management Pressure on the Staff and the System Theory

Coursework Instructions:

Case Scenario 1
The practice manager at Happy Cardiology Services has been asked by human resources to create and implement a program to address concerns brought by the coding, billing, and credentialing staff (n=10). Staff collectively feel that administration does not fully understand their job duties and does not provide a way for the staff to share their concerns about the work environment. Comments have also been made to human resources that some employees feel pressure to up-code and aggressively seek payment from patients. Morale is low, and staff have been resigning rapidly. They are currently at a turnover rate of 22%.

Problem Analysis Worksheet
Enter the number of the Case Study Scenario you chose:

In the space below, discuss the problem outlined in the case study by stating the issue. Include who the issue affects and the appropriate model that can be used to analyze the problem. Provide the rationale for the model you chose.
The problem includes requesting payment, especially from patients, which is uncalled-off. Such an issue mainly affects patients since they cannot afford such an amount of money when they look for such healthcare services. Moreover, the issue of the management pressure on the staff to up their code is another problem that faces the hospital. Pressuring staff makes them resign, affecting them financially and the patients seeking care services in the hospital. Lastly, the issue of needing a formal communication system is another problem. The model or the theory that can be used to examine and analyze this problem is typically called System Theory. The system Theory is a way of examining and looking at the entire component of the firm or organization as a mere system with parts that interact and affect each other (Luhmann, et a., 2013). In this scenario, the patients, the management, and the staff make up the system, and their direct and indirect interactions immediately impact the overall functioning of an entire practice.

In the space provided below, analyze the problem in the Case Study and discuss the ethical considerations.
The ethical considerations within this problem include aggressively requesting or pursuing payment, especially from patients, and feeling pressured to up their code. This could be a conflict of interest as the staff most likely be incentivized as the one prioritizing financial gain over patient care. Moreover, there needs to be better communication between the staff and management, which can lead to feelings of disrespect and mistrust. The staff and the management should have a common ground where they communicate their issues.
