Leadership Capabilities of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Medical assistant: Medical assistants perform basic skills under a licensed medical professional. They are unlicensed and the laws vary depending on the state. In this case Stephanie practiced outside of her job duties by prescribing this medication without approval from a provider.
Nurse Practitioner: Nurse practitioners have a scope of practice that is defined by state law. They are required to follow the ethical principles of their profession and adhere to the standards of care established by their licensing board. The nurse practitioner in this situation could face legal action from the patient if the medication that was prescribed caused the patient harm because the prescription was prescribed by the nurse practitioner as it had the NPs name as the prescribing provider.
Medical Director: Physicians’ core professional obligations include acting in and advocating for patients’ best interests. Even though this was not necessarily the medical directors fault he could have been involved with this as well.
Practice: They are responsible for making sure all staff are properly trained and licensed. They must also ensure all employees follow ethical guidelines and laws. This could of resulted in legal actions against the practice as there should have been the proper policies in place to handle situations like this as the medical assistant should not have prescribed this medication without approval from a medical provider.
The most important thing to prevent this from happening again is proper education and training for all that work in the facility. There needs to be policies in place to prevent further episodes of potentially illegal behavior. While full implementation of appropriate measures will take time and study, we believe it is urgent to take visible actions to acknowledge and address the problem at hand. (Dubois, et, al 2018)
As an APRN I would apply various leadership qualities a to bring a positive change such as good collaboration and coaching skills. I would make sure everyone is informed of changes to policies and EBP research as this may affect patient care. Additional leadership qualities would also include strong research skills, understanding policy and scope of practice, and excel in ethical decision making skills. (Lamb et.al.2018)
