Indigenous and Decolonizing Approaches and Social Support
Answer 1
Indigenous health refers to the social, cultural, emotional, and physical strength and wellbeing of a population. It is extremely important if we want to uplift society and ensure mental peace among individuals. Discrimination, racism, sexism, ethnicity, and emigration status are a few factors that hover around the intersectionality theory. Women with disable children especially have to go through hard times when they leave their native country and settle abroad (Su, Khanlou & Mustafa, 2018). Leaving close relationships can be challenging and have a detrimental impact on their mental health. Depression is one of the most common mood disorder in emigrant women (Aroian et al., 2015). We need to have an anti-colonial approach in order to minimize the mental stressors on people. To ensure the emergence of a healthy society, a struggle against imperialism has become necessary, especially in colonized countries like Canada. There is evidence of more suicide rates among homeless or emigrant people in colonized countries, mostly women and people who identify as LGBTQ2S+. For example, according to a US transgender study, out of 41% reported suicides, 12-19% were transgender adults (Trujillo et al., 2017).
Additionally, more than 40% of adults undergo physical violence due to their gender identity (Trujillo et al., 2017). This alarming rate requires the need to take immediate steps to encourage ingenious and anti-colonial approaches to mental health. Social support is also a significant factor that can help in eliminating gender discrimination and inequality. It demands strong social support to such people irrespective of their gender, living status, and age. Older adults go through mental and physical stress as they leave their country to settle in countries like Canada (Dastjerdi & Mardukhi, 2015). Social support is given in family, friends, companions, and the people around us. Setting awareness programs to educate on the benefits of the anti-colonial approach on mental and physical wellbeing will boost society.
