Discussion One
What exactly is evidence-based practice? Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a way in which problems are solved by using best evidence from studies, patient care data and clinical expertise (Melnyk et al., 2010). It is an approach that nurses and clinicians use in health care that supports the highest quality and best patient outcome. To provide the highest quality of care to patients, nurses seeking a baccalaureate degree in nursing must have certain attitudes to prepare them for the future. What exactly guides us nurses to having the right attitudes to thrive in our field of work? This is where The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) comes in. The QSEN competencies addresses the tasks of preparing nurses with the competencies necessary to improve the quality and safety of the health care system (Cronenwett et al., 2007). There are three attitudes related to EBP that I will seek to enhance personal growth as I work through this course.
First, appreciate the importance of habitually reading pertinent professional journals (QSEN Competencies, n.d.). I believe that seeking to read and understand professional journals will enhance my vocabulary and in turn will help me articulate and explain ideas. Also reading relevant work will help me in my personal career by expanding my understanding of my field. Having an attitude of appreciation towards the work of professionals will have a positive effect on the way I communicate important and up to date information to my patients.
Secondly, value the need for continuous improvement in clinical practice based on new knowledge (QSEN Competencies, n.d.). One of the many ways to improve patient care is to continue to value the new knowledge available. Whether new technology, devices, or apps, all propel nurses provide better care. Today, technology is advising at a seemingly rapid pace, and has aided in the delivery of healthcare in numerous ways. Valuing the era that we are in can help expand out practice. In fact, the use of this new knowledge can “improve outcomes and lower cost through continuous redesign of work processes and systems” (Backhouse & Ogunlayi, 2020, para 7).
Finally, this last attitude is one that I will accept fully and commit myself to it and by doing so, will allow me to grow the most. Acknowledging my own limitations in knowledge can show me weaknesses and lacks thereof. Additionally, this attitude can also help me pinpoint my inabilities and give me a chance to work and strengthen my weaknesses. Admitting that I do not in fact know it all and need help, will allow me to make wiser decisions trough this course and in my field of work. Taking into consideration clinical expertise before determining when to deviate from EBP can help me implement better interventions for patients.
Strategies that will help my personal growth is deleting social media from my phone. So that it’s not easily accessible to me, I plan to temporarily remove the application from my phone. I find myself losing too much time scrolling through pictures and non-sense content. Earing social media until I am done with my courses may help me focus on important things like this class and spending quality time with family. Another strategy I plan to implement is waking up earlier to read and jot down my goals for each day. Getting more sleep, drinking more water, and taking a walk outside if a need a distraction from reading
