Regular physical exercise entails consistent physical activity to promote health and well-being. Exercise significantly benefits human health, including enhancing psychological wellness, managing weight, lowering and reducing the risk of lifestyle diseases, strengthening muscles and bones, and boosting the ability to perform everyday tasks (WHO, 2022b). There are several health issues that regular exercise can manage and prevent. Some of these include hypertension and obesity. Significantly, these diseases develop due to inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle.
Hypertension is when the pressure inside the blood vessels is high, leading to a severe and life-threatening situation when management measures are not applied. It is defined as a pressure of more than 130mmHg (systolic) over 80mmHg (diastolic) (CDC, 2023). Hypertension is one of the significant causes of death for young, middle-aged, and older adults today. Approximately 1.28 Billion adults between thirty and seventy-nine years have hypertension (CDC, 2023). CDC (2023) records that approximately one hundred and sixteen million adults have hypertension. Obesity is when there is excess fat accumulation in the body, which impairs one’s health. Obesity is classified by the Body Mass Index (BMI), which checks for the ratio of weight to height. A BMI above 30 indicates obesity. Since 1975, the global prevalence of obesity has tripled, affecting children and adults (WHO, 2022a). WHO (2023a) records that approximately more than one Billion people are suffering from obesity. Obesity is a critical lifestyle disease that affects the heart, liver, joints, and kidneys. According to Nurdiantami et al. (2018), obesity is a risk factor for the onset of other diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and certain types of cancer, leave alone psychological issues.
