According to McKenzie, Pinger & Seabert (2018, Pg. 5), a community constitutes individuals identified by common characteristics like “geography, interests, experiences, concerns, or values.” Hence, a community goes beyond the traditional definition of a geographic area. With this in mind, I am part of different communities. I will focus on two major communities where I belong; Health Care and Religious community. I will demonstrate how belonging to these two communities positively and negatively affect my health and wellbeing.
On the positive side, belonging to the healthcare community ensures I can access healthcare resources. The community comprises different healthcare professionals ready to assist each other. When I need any medical attention, I can easily find a community member willing to assist in addressing the issue. I am always informed when there are important healthcare activities like screening and treatment since this information is likely to reach the community members before it goes to the general public. Additionally, belonging to the healthcare community ensures I can access critical information. The community provides access to important health information about healthy lifestyles and other behaviors that enhance the wellbeing of members. For instance, I participated in a training emphasizing the importance of physical exercise and eating healthy meals.
Being a member of a religious community has given me a sense of belonging, which is instrumental for spiritual, social, and mental support. The community emphasizes the need for the members to check on each other. When I face challenges, I am assured that I have people I can contact for assistance.
