Group Therapy
The group therapy involved a group of people suffering from anxiety. The group was in the early stages of managing the condition. Therefore, the psychotherapeutic approach used was exposure therapy. Exposure therapy is a technique in behavior therapy whereby the therapist exposes the group to the factors that cause their anxiety (Anderson & Molloy, 2020). The exposure to such factors is done without exposing the patient to any harm. Exposure therapy is effective in treating different types of anxiety disorders. The extend of an individual's symptoms depends on how frequently they are likely to encounter the factor causing the anxiety. For instance, people suffering from social anxiety find it challenging to stay in the company of other people or attend gatherings. These people are considered to have the highest level of anxiety. Therefore, their treatment would involve taking them to gatherings. Exposure therapy would get the patient used to being in gatherings, thus reducing their social anxiety. Exposure therapy has received criticism in the past but has also proved to be an effective treatment of anxiety disorder. When a patient is exposed to the factors causing their anxiety, it is expected that their anxiety severity will reduce.
If I was dealing with a group suffering from anxiety, I would not use the counselor's approach. Such an approach presents the risk of worsening the condition. Counselors believe that the strategy should get the patient used to the factor causing their anxiety (Byrne, Haber, Baillie, Giannopolous & Morley, 2019).
