Edema is a swelling that occurs due to the accumulation of excess fluid in the intestinal space and the body cavities. While the disease can affect any part of the body, it is often prominent in the hands, arms, feet, legs, and ankles. It is categorized as either localized or generalized. Localized edema affects any tissue or organ and includes cerebral, pulmonary, or perorbital edema. On the contrary, generalized edema is known as anasarca. Therefore, edema occurs as a state of imbalance between forces that restrict the fluid into its vessels, against those that force the fluid into the interstitial space.
