On the Horizon
As the world spins on into the third decade of this 21st century all healthcare standards that many nurses trained under have either changed or are under scrutiny. Alternative therapies are always transforming as well. In this discussion you will look at new developments, promising alternative therapeutic treatments, or strengthen your knowledge on some you have heard of but never researched. One of the goals of this course is to make you aware of cutting-edge therapies not only in traditional western healthcare but also the arena of complementary alternative therapies.

Smoking is one of the primary causes of preventable illness and death and quitting can be a huge challenge to most people. Although various forms of behavioral support have been shown to be effective for smoking cessation, hypnosis is one of the few complementary alternative therapies (CATs) whose efficacy is still under review. Hypnotherapy integrates hypnosis (a meditative state) and psychological therapy to allow patients to gain greater mastery over their mind and body (Barnes et al., 2019). Instead of slowly reducing the urge to smoke (like inhalers, gum, or patches), hypnosis treatment works to quiet the conscious mind and target the unconscious motivations for smoking. During the hypnotherapy session, the therapist strives to break these associations while making suggestions based on the patient’s cessation goals.
