Leadership and Management in Healthcare
Contrast the Importance of Leadership against the Importance of Management
Although often used interchangeably, the terms leadership and management have different meanings. Leadership is the ability to guide and influence a team to achieve specific goals. On the other hand, management refers to the coordination and implementation of principles such as making plans, recruiting staff, giving directions, organizing, and controlling processes to achieve the organization's goals. Despite being different, some qualities are desirable in both roles. A good leader should possess some managerial skills, and a good manager should have minimum leadership skills. Both positions are important in running an organization to achieve the goals set.
A leader influences his team to achieve goals and shows the path towards attaining the set goals. Leadership is important as it projects the vision of an institution and motivates the workers to work towards realizing it. Leaders come up with innovations that are beneficial to the organization and other stakeholders. They make changes to improve their institutions' working environment and services. A leader needs to be innovative and brave enough to change as the company evolves or the vision and mission change. Rigidity may lead to the inability to compete with other service providers leading to losses. Leadership is important in guiding employees to adapt to the changing workplace dynamics. A leader instills confidence in the workers and empowers them to achieve goals for the company's benefit (Akkaya & Tabak, 2020). When a leader shares their company's dream with the employees, he invites them to own the vision and feel part of the project, which increases motivation. Leadership is also important in an institution as it involves setting rules, guidelines, and policies that govern its running.
On the other hand, the role of management in an organization is to oversee the work of the employees to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. A manager implements the leader's vision by supervising and controlling his subordinates to ensure they work towards the goals. The management of an organization also serves administrative duties and promotes discipline among workers by regulating their behavior. The manager promotes discipline by implementing the guidelines and policies set by the leader and managing conflicts that may arise among workers. Management skills are vital in ensuring resources are utilized to the maximum to avoid wastage. They ensure that the company functions smoothly every day and maintains its stability and status quo (George, 2020). Additionally, a manager communicates the company's goals to workers and what is expected.
