The PICOT question is: In cancer patients with fatigue, does yoga as compared to normal care, reduce the symptoms of fatigue, within 12 months after implementation?
Background
Beitoni (2018) analyzes evidence-based research and practices that explore the benefits of yoga to cancer patients. The study explains how yoga therapy improves the health and wellness of patients. The study demonstrates how knowledge of the benefits of yoga is beneficial in integrating yoga therapy into cancer care with the aim of reducing fatigue. The study has two research questions. The first one examines whether yoga would be more beneficial physically and mentally compared to the current approach. The second one looks at how the present interventions utilized in the treatment of cancer differed from the use of yoga.
Danhauer, Addington, Sohl, Chaoul & Cohen (2017) acknowledge that cancer diagnosis and treatment increase distress and cause biomedical sequelae like fatigue and pain. While some of the effects of cancer are temporary, the authors indicate that a majority of them persist, hence the patients have to manage them in the long-term. In order to manage the adverse effects, individuals may result in mind-body practices like yoga. The objective of the study was to identify trials for individuals undergoing cancer treatment. The study did not have research questions. The study is critical in assisting healthcare professionals especially nurses to recognize the essence of yoga in dealing with fatigue among cancer patients.
How do these two articles support the nurse practice issue you chose?
The two articles will be critical in providing information relevant to the PICOT question. The study aims at examining how yoga reduced the symptoms of fatigue compared to normal care. In answering the PICOT question, concrete evidence will be required. The conclusion on the question will be as a result of the extensive study of the available data. Hence, the two articles will offer the relevant data required to address the issues raised in the question. Using the articles, it will be possible to determine the impact of yoga on minimizing fatigue to cancer patients compared to normal interventions.
In the PICOT question, the intervention is yoga while the comparison group is normal to care. Similarly, in both Beitoni (2018) and Danhauer et al. (2017) the intervention is yoga therapy and the comparison is traditional treatment. In the two articles, the researchers have used yoga as the intervention. The outcome of the application of yoga on cancer patients is compared with other cancer patients where yoga was not utilized at all. Hence, both the PICOT question and the articles have a similar intervention and comparison groups.
Method of Study:
Beitoni (2018) uses an integrative literature review. The researcher performed a literature search and identified articles on interventions that have been done regarding yoga therapy and the wellness of cancer patients. The literature review was mainly guided by the framework developed by Whittemore and Knafl (2005). The researcher analyzed the articles to establish the health benefit...
