Negotiation in patient education implies the interactions between the physician and the patient as part of the shared decision-making framework. It incorporates patient-centeredness dimensions, including exploring and recognizing patient preferences, expressed needs, and values. Negotiation entails communicating information to ensure medical decisions respect patients’ autonomy, preferences, and needs (Abraham & Alberts, 2013).
The patient status has changed over time from the physician-centered insight on their health to optimal levels of empowerment where clients can implement the education. Traditionally, patients were illiterate and had little autonomy to implement physician health education. In contemporary health practice, physicians spend more time interacting with patients to understand their ability to self-manage their illness (Paterick et al., 2017).
A negotiating environment helps healthcare professionals and patients within the shared decision-making framework by encouraging parties to consider the distinct kinds of “interests” impacting the client’s decision-making. However, the shared decision-making framework of negation can confuse both physicians and the patient, resulting in undesirable treatment outcomes (Abraham & Alberts, 2013).
All patients’ agreements should include fundamental elements, including the patient’s behavioral expectations, the provider and staff members’ behavioral expectations, the parties to the agreement, the ramifications of violating the agreement terms, and the signatures of those engaging in the agreement. Healthcare providers must also ensure the agreements are personalized to the respective patient’s needs (Medpro Group, 2019).
The baby boomers were born after the second world war, between 1946 and 1964. This implies that the oldest persons born during this period are 75 years today. Baby boomers are part of the elderly population. Regarding old age, all baby boomers would be aged sixty-five and above in 2030 (United States Census Bureau, 2019).
Regarding religion, the 30-year-old healthcare professional is less likely to attach church compared to the elderly patient (Twenge et al., 2015). Concerning generational differences, the millennial healthcare provider is also over threefold as likely to be married as the elderly patient when they were young. Regarding culture, the healthcare professional could prefer to live in the city than the boomer did when they were 30 years old back then (Fry, Igielnik, & Patten, 2018).
Barriers to patient education in old age include lack of skills and knowledge, inappropriate environments, negative attitude towards elderly care, lack of resources, and providing care without considering patient’s age (Heydari, Sharifi, & Moghaddam, 2019). Special needs for this population include arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.
