I define natural birth as a low-tech method of delivering a baby in which nature is allowed to take its course. The expectant woman goes through labour and giving birth without the help of pain relievers or any other medicines. I think doctors define it as childbirth with no drugs or routine medical interventions such as the use of anaesthesia. They also describe it as a non-medicated approach to labour and birth. Throughout history, women have been delivering babies without medical intervention or drugs, sometimes at home.
In general, there are usually two sides to every story. The Business of Being Born presents the obstetrician care in the United States as a dysfunctional business which has relegated midwives to the side-line allowing doctors who do not know the natural birth process to carry out risky and needless interventions. The movie asserts that other industrialized countries attain better outcomes cost-effectively with the use of midwives for nearly all births. There are quite a few factors that might have been overlooked by doctors in the film The Business of Being Born. It overlooks the work of obstetric nurses and nurse midwives in hospitals. In addition, the movie does not explain the way other midwives differ from nurse midwives. Furthermore, this film could have been more focused and balanced. Overall, this movie is a powerful call for women in the United States to regain their capacity to birth their own children, naturally.
