Casey, age 21, is the quarterback for a college football team. While passing the football to one of his teammates, he was tackled. After the tackle, he could not stand up. He sustained a couple of leg injuries including a fracture to his femur and strain to his hamstring muscle.
QUESTIONS:
1. Describe a compound fracture. Discuss if it is likely that this is the type of fracture he sustained.

The Dunbar & Cannada (n.d.) state that a compound fracture which is also known as an open fracture happens when the fragment of the fractured bone penetrates through the skin, exposing the injury. This is unlikely the fracture that the patient sustained because the mechanism of injury of compound fractures is usually a high-velocity force such as in motor vehicular accident or gunshot wound. However, there is a minimal chance of incurring a compound fracture in a low-energy incident such as in playing sports.

The patient’s femur must be immobilized before transporting to the hospital. This is done to prevent further insult to other important structures such as the nerves, blood, and lymphatic vessels and to provide stability to the injury (Muminagic, 2011).
