I plan to apply the epidemiology concept of descriptive epidemiology in my APRN practice to classify epidemics according to time, person, and place and arrive at a clearer understanding of the urgency of the outbreak. The concept is especially useful in categorizing and evaluating epidemiological data to describe the deviations in disease frequency among populations by region and over periods (CDC, 2019). I will use descriptive epidemiology to define the distributions of outbreaks and generate etiologic research hypotheses. For instance, by analyzing the characteristics of the place, person, and time, over and above, identifying the differences, correlations, and similarities, I will be in a position to make informed hypotheses about the factors and circumstances causing the outbreak. I will also be able to isolate those personal characteristics (diet, medications, occupation, family history, sexual habits, religious practices, or leisure activities) and location factors (living, work, or travel arrangements) featuring overtime to arrive at evidence-based etiological suppositions about a disease.
I plan to apply the biostatics concept of central tendency together with variability in my APRN practice to conduct descriptive statistics. The concept is essential when examining general values during an epidemic as well as the spread of values for each factor in a data set. Mean, median, and mode as measures of central tendency are critical in summarizing general values. In contrast, variance, standard deviation, and range as measures of variability are critical in describing the spread of values (Hazra & Gogtay, 2016).
