Introduction
The Response to Intervention (RTI) model is a framework for providing instructional support to struggling students. It is a multi-tier approach that provides increasing support to students who are not responding to classroom instruction (Bessette, 2022). The goal of RTI is to prevent academic failure by using data-based decision-making to identify students who are at risk for academic difficulties and provide them with early intervention and support. A multi-tier approach is used to provide increasing levels of instructional support according to the degree of student response to initial interventions (Davis & Bianco, 2010). The tiers, or levels, that are used in an RTI approach can differ in name and may vary in degree of intensity.
A model with more than one level starts with Tier 1, or universal screening, which finds students who might have trouble in school (Davis & Bianco, 2010). Based on how the student did on Tier 1, other tiers are chosen. The following levels are:
Tier 2 (Early Intervening Services). These supports are given to certain students before teaching methods have stopped working (Davis & Bianco, 2010).
Tier 3 (Extended Intervening Services). Students who aren't getting help from Tier 2 supports are taught at this level.
Tier 4 (Additional Intervening Services). At this level, professionals from the school district, other agencies, or the community step in to help.
