Introduction
Two parents' presence in a children's life is vital because they perform distinct but important roles in their emotional and psychological development. However, recent alterations in family structures have impacted the support system provided by parents to children post-trauma. In the 1950s, couples got married at a young age and stayed together until "death do them apart." In contrast, less than half of U.S kids today live in a traditional family compared to 73% in 1960. This phenomenon has led to researchers questioning whether the parent who remains after the loss of the other one can meet the emotional needs of children, especially in the event of a traumatic experience. This paper examines how the presence of only one parent weakens children's reactions to trauma.
Use of children as support systems
Although the strength of marriages varies, all couples have marital bonds to some extent. Therefore, while death ends a couples' relationship, the remaining partner usually has some sense of connection to the lost partner, which may intensify the sense of feeling abandoned. Rather than facing the grief, a single parent who still feels abandoned may view their children as a perfect replacement of the deceased partner. This perception leads to close monitoring, physical distance restriction, and the prohibition of establishing any relationship with girlfriends or boyfriends. Single parents with mental illnesses such as borderline personality may go as far as intentionally creating situations that put their children under pressure to return home (Granot, 2005, p 159).
