The Role of Literature Review in Research Studies
A literature review is an integral part of a research study. This is mainly because it functions as the expository part of the study. At its core, a literature review is aimed at providing relevant context and perspective on the research topic through an elaborate analysis and synthesis of both existing research and the list of academic sources identified to support the research topic (Wallin & Ahlstrom, 2006). In this way, a literature review serves to place all academic and supporting sources in the context of the research topic and helps further expound the research question in the process. In this sense, a literature review provides exposition to the study and serves as a precursor of what the research study seeks to discuss.
As far as their roles are concerned, literature reviews in both qualitative and quantitative studies have the same purpose (Onwuegbuzie & Frels, 2016).
